STATE REQUIREMENTS
The information contained in below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience and examination requirements established by the South Dakota Appraiser Real Estate Appraisal Board.
Levels of Licensure
There are four levels of real estate appraiser licensing. They are:

Education:
Each level must successfully complete the specified hours of approved real estate appraisal courses for each level of licensure, which includes at least 15 hours on the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). The specified hours are:
75 hours for the State Registered Appraiser classification
90 hours for the State Licensed Appraiser classification. The classroom hours required for the licensed real estate appraiser may include the classroom hours required for the appraiser trainee.
120 hours for the State Certified Residential Appraiser classification. The classroom hours required for the certified residential real estate appraiser may include the classroom hours required for the appraiser trainee or the licensed real estate appraiser. Narrative report writing must be included in these educational course hours.
180 hours for the State Certified General Appraiser classification. The classroom hours required for the certified general real estate appraiser may include the classroom hours required for the appraiser trainee, the licensed residential real estate appraiser, or the certified residential real estate appraiser. Narrative report writing must be included in these educational course hours.
Experience:
All experience must be supported by documentation on forms provided by the Board.
License Renewal:
All South Dakota appraisal certificates expire on September 30 of each year except for those issued after the first week of July. New licenses issued after the first week in July will not expire until September 30 the following year. Renewal Packets are mailed out the first week in July and must be completed, notarized, and returned to the SD Appraiser Certification Program office along with the renewal fee no later than August 17 of the current year.
Continuing Education Requirements:
Each odd number year, verification of completed continuing education must also be submitted with the renewal application and fee. The continuing education requirements are the completion of the equivalent of 28 hours of instruction. Of these hours, a minimum of 7 hours of instruction covering USPAP must be included.
