STATE REQUIREMENTS
The information contained in below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience and examination requirements established by the New York State Board of Real Estate Appraiser.
Levels of Licensure
There are four levels of real estate appraiser licensing. They are:

Education:
Each level must successfully complete the specified hours of approved real estate appraisal courses for each level of licensure. These hours must be completed sequentially for residential and general appraisal classification. The specified hours are:
90 hours for the Licensed Real Estate Appraiser Assistant classification. These hours include 30 hours of Introduction to Real Estate Appraisal (R-1), 30 hours of Valuation Principles and Procedures (R-2), 15 hours of Fair Housing, Fair Lending, and Environmental Issues (AQ-1) and 15 hours of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice (E/S).
90 hours for the Licensed Real Estate Appraiser classification. These hours include 30 hours of Introduction to Real Estate Appraisal (R-1), 30 hours of Valuation Principles and Procedures (R-2), 15 hours of Fair Housing, Fair Lending, and Environmental Issues (AQ-1) and 15 hours of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice (E/S)
120 hours for the Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser classification. These hours include 30 hours of Introduction to Real Estate Appraisal (R-1), 30 hours of Valuation Principles and Procedures (R-2), 30 hours of Applied Residential Property Valuation (R-3), 15 hours of Introduction to One-Four Family Income Capitalization (R-4), and 15 hours of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice (E/S).
180 hours for the Certified General Real Estate Appraiser classification. These hours include 30 hours of Introduction to Real Estate Appraisal (R-1), 30 hours of Valuation Principles and Procedures (R-2), 30 hours of Introduction to Income Property Valuation (G-1), 30 hours of Principles of Income Property Appraising (G-2), 30 hours of Applied Income Property Valuation (G-3), 15 hours of Fair Housing, Fair Lending, and Environmental Issues (AQ-1)and 15 hours of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice (E/S).
Experience:
All experience must be supported by documentation on forms provided by the Board.
License Renewal:
The renewal application is posted to the appraiser approximately three months prior to the expiration of his or her license/certification. The application must be completed and submitted with a $300 fee to the Department of State. Instructions for proper submission are included with the renewal application. To avoid an additional $200 penalty fee, the renewal must be received by this office no later than 30 days after the expiration date of your current license/certification.
Continuing Education Requirements:
As a prerequisite to renewal of license or recertification, an appraiser must present evidence satisfactory to the Department of Licensing of having completed, during the immediately preceding term of certification or licensing, not less than 28 hours of continuing education.
