STATE REQUIREMENTS

The information contained in below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience and examination requirements established by the North Carolina Real Estate Appraiser Board. http://www.ncappraisalboard.org/index.htm The information can be found in the North Carolina Statutes and Rules and Regulations. However, we recommend that you contact the Appraisal Board for more detailed information.

Four Categories of Appraisers in North Carolina

To Be Eligible for Licensure/Certification, a person must:

Education:

All qualifying education must have been obtained within the 5 year period immediately proceeding the date of application. Each level must successfully complete the specified hours of approved real estate appraisal courses for each level of licensure, which includes at least 15 hours on the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). The specified hours are:

90 hours for the Registered Trainee classification.

90 hours for the Licensed Residential Appraiser classification.

120 hours for the Certified Residential Appraiser classification. The classroom hours required for the Certified Residential Appraiser may include the classroom hours required for the Licensed Appraiser.

180 hours for the Certified General Appraiser classification. The classroom hours required for the Certified General Appraiser may include the classroom hours required for the Licensed Appraiser and Certified Residential Appraiser.

Experience:

  1. There is no experience requirement for the Registered Trainee. Registered Trainees must work under the direct supervision of a licensed or certified residential, or certified general appraiser.
  2. Applicants for a Licensed Residential Appraiser certificate shall have a minimum of 240 points of experience (approximately 2,400 hours of experience).
  3. Applicants for a Certified Residential Appraiser certificate shall have a minimum of 300 points of experience (approximately 3,000 hours of experience) over a period of no less than 24 months.
  4. Applicants for a Certified General Appraiser certificate shall have a minimum of 360 points of experience (approximately 3,600 hours of experience) over a period of no less than 30 months. The experience shall include at least 1,500 hours in non-residential appraisal work.

License/Certificate Renewal :

All registrations, licenses and certificates expire on June 30 of each year unless renewed before that time. A holder of a trainee registration, an appraiser license or certificate desiring the renewal of such registration, license or certificate shall apply for same in writing and shall forward the required fee of two-hundred dollars ($200.00). Forms are available upon request to the Board.

Continuing Education:

A requirement for renewal is that the appraiser must submit proof of completing 14 hours of continuing education within the renewal year. Registered Trainees will need to submit proof of completing 14 hours of continuing education on the 3 rd renewal period.
