STATE REQUIREMENTS

The information contained below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience and examination requirements established by the Iowa Real Estate Appraiser Board. http://www.state.ia.us/government/com/prof/realappr/realappr.htm The information can be found in the Iowa Administrative Code and Administrative Rules. However, we recommend that you contact the Appraisal Board for more detailed information.

Three Categories of Appraisers in Iowa:

To Be Eligible for Licensure/Certification, a person must:

Education:

Each level must successfully complete the specified hours of approved real estate appraisal courses for each level of licensure, which includes at least 15 hours on the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). The specified hours are:

Experience:

Applicants shall list their appraisal experience on the application provided by the Board.

  1. There is no experience requirement for an Associate Real Property Appraiser. Associate Appraisers must work under the direct supervision of an appraiser who is certified in good standing.
  2. Applicants for a Certified Residential Real Property Appraiser certificate shall have a minimum of 2,500 hours of experience within 24 months.
  3. Applicants for a Certified General Real Property Appraiser certificate shall have a minimum if 3,000 hours of experience within 30 months. At least 1,500 hours must be non-residential.

License/Certificate Renewal :

To maintain a certificate or associate registration, the individual shall renew the certificate or registration every two years. Persons whose last names begin with the letters A to K shall renew in even-numbered years. Persons whose last names begin with the letters L to Z shall renew in odd numbered years . Certificates and registrations shall expire biennially on June 30. Applications for renewal of a certificate or registration shall be submitted upon forms obtained from the board office. Education Requirements:

In order to renew a license, the applicant must complete a minimum of 28 credit hours in approved continuing education programs acquired during the two year renewal period. Carryover hours from a previous renewal term are not allowed.

A minimum of 14 of the required 28 credit hours must directly involve one or more of the following topics:

  1. real estate appraisal law and rules;
  2. report writing;
  3. cost approach;
  4. sales approach;
  5. income approach and and USPAP.

A minimum of 3 of the required 28 credit hours must involve USPAP. A maximum of 14 of the required 28 credit hours may be completed in homestudy.
