DISTRICT REQUIREMENTS
The information contained below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience, and examination requirements established by the District of Columbia Board of Appraisers. We recommend that you contact the Board (1-888-204-6206) for more detailed information and for any law or regulation changes which may have occurred.
Levels of Real Estate Appraiser Licensing:
- Residential Real Property Appraiser
- General Real Property Appraiser
To Get Your Initial License/Certificate, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Not have been convicted of a crime of moral turpitude which bears directly on the applicant's fitness to be licensed
- Turn in a complete, notarized application form provided by the Board
- Include with the application, two recent passport photos measuring 2 "x2" and the licensing fees
- Show evidence of satisfactorily completion the required hours of education and submit a Certificate of Appraiser Education Form
- Submit to the Board satisfactory evidence of required experience on Notarized Work Experience Log of Appraisal Reports
- Submit Work Experience Log Forms
- Take and pass a written State exam and submit the Passing Score Report
- Submit the Board's Application for Appraiser License within 30 months of passing the exam.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Residential Real Property Appraiser : A minimum of 90 hours of appraisal education acceptable to the Board with at least 15 hours of the National Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) course. Must also obtain over a minimum of two years at least 2000 hours of appraisal experience.
- General Real Property Appraiser : A minimum of 180 hours of appraisal education acceptable to the Board with at least 15 hours the National USPAP course. These hours may include the 90 hours required for the Residential license. Must also obtain over a minimum of two years at least 3000 hours of appraisal experience. Of these hours, 1500 hours must be in non-residential appraising
LICENSE RENEWAL :
A license or certificate issued shall expire on February 28th of each even number year.
Continuing Education Requirements :
There shall be no continuing education requirements for applicants who obtain a license during the second year of the two year period preceding the date the license expires. All other licensees must complete at least 28 hours of continuing education during the three year licensing period. Appraisers must take the USPAP 7 hour update course within a licensing period.
